Between the Sticks – How the Game Works
Between the Sticks is a fast-paced 1v1 goalkeeper competition designed to put goalkeepers at the centre of the game. Every match is built around constant action, quick restarts and fair play, creating an environment where goalkeepers can compete, react and develop under pressure.
Each game is played on a 24-yard pitch, split into two 10-yard playing zones with a central Dead Zone. Goalkeepers stay in their own zone at all times and the Dead Zone can never be entered. If the ball stops in the Dead Zone, the round ends immediately.
Each round begins with a designated KIP, or Keeper In Possession. The KIP starts the round with the ball and takes the opening shot. Once that opening shot is taken, the ball becomes live and the game moves into open play.
From that point on, the game flows freely. Shots, saves and rebounds continue with no fixed turns or stoppages. The round only ends if a goal is scored, a clean catch is made, or the ball stops in the Dead Zone.
When a goal is scored, the goalkeeper who conceded starts the next round. If a round ends due to a clean catch or the ball stopping in the Dead Zone, the starting goalkeeper switches for the next round. This system keeps the game fair, prevents one-sided runs and allows rallies to build naturally.
If the ball goes out of play during a round, the game does not stop. A shot that is saved or tipped out is restarted by the goalkeeper who took the shot. A shot that goes wide without a save is restarted by the other goalkeeper. Play restarts quickly to maintain tempo and maximise involvement.
Goals and clean catches are both worth one point. Matches are time-based, with match duration varying depending on age group and league size. Exact timings are confirmed before the season or on the day of competition.
Between the Sticks places a strong emphasis on safety, respect and development. Player welfare comes first at all times, and the league promotes positive behaviour from players, parents and spectators alike.
